The 25 video lessons average approximately 15–25 minutes each. Every lesson was deliberately designed to be profound; long enough to develop the idea, but concise enough to leave room for reflection.

The course explores the moral, intellectual, and political principles of the American Revolution and Declaration of Independence, along with the formation of the citizen required to understand and preserve them.

How deep you go is up to you. Each lesson includes an extensive Learning Guide with primary-source readings, vocabulary, key concepts, discussion questions, writing prompts, and "painting" analysis. Spend hours exploring a single lesson, or simply experience the lesson and use as much, or as little, of the guide as serves you.

The journey has structure. The depth is yours to choose.

This curriculum does not cover the Constitution and its Ratifying Debates. That is in the next curriculum, set for release in 2028.

There is no age limit on learning how to live free.

Language of Freedom is about political ideas, but it is not designed to teach a political ideology or tell students what to think about modern political issues. 

The course returns to primary sources and the enduring questions beneath the American Founding: What is liberty? Where do rights come from? What makes authority legitimate? What separates law from arbitrary power? What responsibilities accompany freedom?

The narration provides historical context and helps students follow the conversation, while the sources themselves remain the primary teachers.

The aim is not to tell students what to think. It is to give them the intellectual foundation to think, question, and judge for themselves.

Language of Freedom explores political philosophy, not partisan politics.

Language of Freedom is not a religious curriculum and does not require students to belong to a particular faith.

However, it does not remove religion from the historical and philosophical conversation. The Founders and many of the thinkers they drew upon believed deeply and wrestled seriously with God, natural law, conscience, Providence, morality, and the source of human rights.

Those ideas are encountered through their own words and considered within their historical and philosophical context.

The aim is not to prescribe belief, but neither is it to remove belief from a conversation in which it historically mattered.

The original images throughout Language of Freedom are created with generative AI under my direction. They are not historical artifacts or traditionally painted works of art; and are never presented as such.

We call them “paintings” because that is the spirit in which they were created. Each begins with an idea: How might we give visual form to liberty, power, conscience, equality, stewardship, prudence, or natural law?

Some depict historical moments. Others use symbolism, landscape, architecture, and metaphor to make an abstract principle visible.

My name is Gary Vesper, creator and teacher of Language of Freedom. I hold a B.A. in History and a Master of Arts in Education, and have taught American history and government to both high-school and homeschool students. 

Language of Freedom began in 2019 as a project of love; for the principles of liberty, for the American story, and for the remarkable conversation about human nature, rights, responsibility, government, and freedom that stretches across centuries.

What began as an idea to create a new way to teach the American Founding gradually became something much larger. I spent years reading primary sources, following ideas from one thinker to another, writing and rewriting lessons, teaching early versions, creating Learning Guides, and searching for ways to give difficult and abstract principles visual form. I wanted every source, every word, every painting, and every lesson to have a reason for being there, and for each idea to prepare the student to understand the next.

I kept working on this project because I believed this story deserved to be told well. More importantly, I believed the truths within it deserved to be understood. Not as relics of another century, but as living questions about what it means to be human, to possess rights, to exercise responsibility, and to live as a free person.

After years of refinement, those ideas have become the 25-lesson journey you see today.

Founding Principles begins that education by exploring the moral, intellectual, and political principles of the American Founding and the Declaration of Independence.

There are two paths forward for students who want to continue the conversation:

The Language of Freedom Fellowship is an ongoing community for students who have completed Founding Principles and want to continue learning together. Each month, students receive a newly created Language of Freedom lesson and companion Learning Guide, followed by a live gathering to explore the new material, ask questions, and continue the conversations begun during the semester.

And in 2028, the education continues with our second complete curriculum:

Constitutional Governance

If Founding Principles asks what principles make a free society possible, Constitutional Governance explores the next great question:

How were those principles translated into a system of government capable of preserving them?

Students will move from the principles embodied in the Declaration to the architecture of the Constitution, exploring representation, federalism, separation of powers, checks and balances, republican government, abolition, the Bill of Rights, and the challenge of governing a free people.

Founding Principles begins the education.
The Fellowship continues the conversation.
Constitutional Governance carries it forward.
